Reunion News

July 24, 2009

The 45th Reunion is over and was extremely successful. We all had a really great time. For me this was the first time I did not bring my camera so I have no photos or video. I'll have to rely on others up upload digital images I can post. Just contact me for the email address.

I received an email from Gary Kelly which reads:

Hello to all classmates of class of '64..........I was un able to attend the reunion , I am in hopes that you all had fun, and that someone has lots of photo's to share via the website of the class???? If my luck holds and the creek dont rise , I'll see you all for our 50th! my best to all Gary Kelley 509-522-1229

Steve Dumdi told me today that Linda Armour will probably attend the reunion this year.

Linda remarried, again, about five years ago and is doing pretty well, thank you.

45th Reunion this year.

Well, it's reunion year again. I spoke with John last week. This spring we'll be holding the organizing committee to get the reunion on it's way. Seems we've done this before. Any volunteers who would like to help please contact John Shadden.

Looking forward to seeing all of you again this year.

- Jim

Lester Helvie
1945-2008

Lester Helvie died August 9 2008 of complications of cancer. He was 62. Lester was born born December 15, 1945, in McMinnville to Norman and Jennie Bishop Helvie. Lester graduated from Yamhill- Carlton High School. Survivors include his wife, Sally Farrel Helvie; his parents, and four daughters.

Lester was known as the "studious" guy, rather quiet and shy. He had a passion for photography.

We'll surely all miss him, as we ponder, day by day, who will be the last lone Tiger's survivor, the last person to attend the last reunion, sadly, in 2049, by themselves.

George Ing Dies
1936-2005

STORY

Wayne 1999

Wayne Morgan died in May 2004. Steve Dumdi reports Wayne died while working on a logging job. They tried to revive him but nothing worked. It was quick, fast, apparently the result of heart failure or blood clot, and long suffering leg problems. Wayne was not married but is survived by two daughters who live in Mac. Steve says Wayne also has one or two grand kids.

If you have to go, and well, we all do, doing so on the job is better than dying of cancer in some damn hospital! Wayne lived life his way, never changing, same in his 50's as he was as a teen. We'll all miss Wayne.

December 29, 2003 - Well, here it is 2003, more than four years after our last reunion. As you know, we have a reunion every 5 years. There should be another reunion in 2004.

As you can tell, the website is now open. I removed all personal records so the website is safe for everyone. The reason is that too many people kept forgetting their passwords and well, it was decided they were not really required, at least, not for the time being. So, you can now tell your friends to see the website. Usernames and password are not required for the main part of the website, and the rest, which did require them, has been at least temporarily removed.

We'll get back to all of you on this just as soon as the time and place are set. In the meantime, here is some old info back more than four years ago:

Mrs. Zachow, Carlton 7th grade Teacher Dies

Carlton grade school teacher Ada Mildred Zachow, 93, of Salem, died March 9, 2000. She was born in Knoxville, Iowa. She lived in McMinnville and Salem before working as a teacher in Carlton. She was a member of the Protestant Church. She was preceded in death by one son, two sisters, two brothers and her husband, Clarence, whom she married in 1934; he died in 1997.Survivors include her daughters, Reva Maulding of Bellevue, Wash., Hollie Groves of Salem and Sharon Huiras of Woodburn; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

January 8, 2000 - Message from Jim Carlson
I heard about Larry from my brother Larry who lives in Carlton and thought I'd check on your site. It's good to see that you are keeping up the good work you started here. Did you think it would amount to this much work when you started? Do you intend to continue maintaining this site? I hope so, it's a good place to keep up on what's happening. Especially for those too lazy to make it to the reunions. Really sorry I didn't make it, as I would have liked to see Byron and the others.

Anyway, really too bad about Larry, he was one of the good people I think and would have liked seeing again. I ran into him a couple times many years ago in Mac and enjoyed talking with him at those times. Did he ever marry or have kids? Was he working somewhere in the Carlton area? By the way, you have Wilmer Adolf listed as Wilber on your site. It would be good to correct that if you could.

Ya know, if you were to keep this site updated from now on, you could add little headstones by each one of us as we go. The way I figure it, that would ensure your longevity, as you would be required to be last in order to keep up the tally. I intend to hold out to the end myself, so it may be a race between me and you to see who wins. That was intended to be a kind of humor (?), as we will all be going sooner or later (I think), and not sick. Sometimes hard to express via e-mail. I think about these things more the older I get for some reason. Plus, when I get on this thing late at night, I get a bit strange. And it's been a long day too.

Thanks again for your excellent job on this site and keep up the good work. I am more impressed on how well you have it set up each time I visit. I look foreword to visiting it in the future to keep up with the latest.

So long, Jim Carlson.

January 3, 2000 - Larry Briggs dies.
I just learned that Larry Briggs has died on the morning of December 31st, 1999, one day before the new millennium. The details are very slim but I understand there will be no autopsy and suggests he may have died of natural causes. I spoke with Larry last summer when he said he'd be attending the Reunion, which he was not able to do. The conversation was quite pleasant and I remember him as excited about the Reunion and very sweet. Funeral arrangements are scheduled for Wednesday, January 5th, 2000 at 1pm at the First Baptist Church in Carlton, Oregon. I'll post more details as they become available.

October 3, 1999 - Of course, the Reunion is over for this year (there will be more, perhaps a small one next year) but the website continues. This HELP area was created for general news about the website. I will be posting most of the images I took at the Reunion on the website here, when I get some time and energy. At the moment I've posted a few. The others will come when I find the time and the energy. If you'd like to send a copy of your photo you took at the Reunion to be placed here on the website, just send it to the address above. If you'd like me to return it once I post it here, please let me know.

September 11, 1999 - The PHOTOS section has been completely changed and improved. We now offer preview images which allows you to see what you'll get when you click on the link. To see what I mean, just click here.

September 10, 1999 - As of today, we have 54 people who have confirmed and paid to attend the 35th year Reunion on September 25th, just two weeks away. I send the second round of Registration Forms out for those who may have missed them the first time, or set them aside and forgot them, or those who may have changed their mind.

August 16, 1999 - I will be taking time to scan lots of photos, most of which were lent to me by Lester and Lynda, who I want to promise that I will get them back to you, for sure. I may not have time until right up to the Reunion. The photos will be scanned from the High School Year Book and from the Carlton Grade school Yearbook. I'll have to later get a copy of the Yamhill Grade School book but we already have all the annual photos.

August 14, 1999 - I purchased a new domain. Too many of you were confused with the older domain of yc64.com. For some reason many of you insisted on placing a period after the YC which was wrong. The new domain is probably easier to remember but it's longer. So, now the website has been moved from http://www.yc64.com to http://www.yamhillcarlton.com. Both work.

August 13, 1999 - The Newsletter and Registration Form for the Reunion was mailed today. You should receive it within three or four days. I sent it out on Friday The 13th. Hope that's a good sign! It has everything you need to know and perhaps more. It also includes a envelope with a return address and a stamp already on it for you.

August 4, 1999 - Several fatal errors were fixed on the website. A few of you would have seen this problem as constantly having been asked to re-enter your username and password. No real excuse except to say I'm getting older and have been soooo busy with the Reunion and Newsletter.

July 28, 1999 - I'm still working on the Newsletter and Registration form which will be mailed to everyone. I expect it to go out by the 15th of August or so, 1999. It's been a busy summer but it will go out. So, the Reunion is still going strong, it will happen on the date promised. And it is looking good. I expect this will be the largest turn-out in our Reunion history.

REUNION DATE AND PLACE DECIDED Click here for details, dates, place, staff, photos.

June 3, 1999 - Posted more images (click on Photos to the far left). These include 5th grade class and 8th grade graduation photos.

June 1, 1999 - Our second Reunion Committee Staff meeting was held tonight. See the REUNION option for details and for pictures of the meeting.

May 29, 1999 - As many of you know, Robert Hamlin has MS. I called him tonight. We were wondering if he was still alive. He answered the phone and let me know it was so. I also talked to his wife Betty who was very interested in the Reunion and the website. They're taking a trip this summer and I understand it's somewhat of a test of his endurance. So, they may be able to attend the Reunion in September. They will keep us updated. It was so very nice to talk to Bob after so many years. Bob and Betty give their best to all of us.

May 28, 1999 - We now have a new Pentium III 450 Mhz system dedicated for the yamhillcarlton.com domain. I got tired dealing with the old system, its flaws and limitations. So, this will give us new power. It also means I'll have to reprogram lots of areas. If you have any problems with the system, in it's display, such as having to enter your username and password twice, then it's best for you to delete your browser cache (temporary internet files) so your system is not confused.

May 26, 1999 - With the help of Betty Larrabee I've added some very nice Yamhill grade school images, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade class group photos. What a treat. I do hope to get the entire set. These are from Yamhill. Hell, why not add Carlton grade school photos too? Anyway, thanks Betty. She also uploaded some photos which were missing from the senior class which I will be including later.

May 25, 1999 - Removed the older password authorization program and replaced it with state of the art username and password authorization program with the highest level of security, unless you give your username and password to someone else. Please don't. This will assure that all information is completely private on the net. It means you have to remember your password and username but the trade-off, I believe, it worth it all.

May 24, 1999 - Added new features for the Database area, which includes all member records, such as address and telephone number and email address, which can be set to PRIVATE if you so choose. This information is seen only by other members (YC High students) but you can turn it off if you like. Please update your record and any information you see there. I'd sure like to see any personal comments others would like to read when they see your profile. When you click on your Database, your profile, you automatically go into the edit mode.

I also added the ability to click on the image in the Database area so one can see the larger senior class photo. More options here later. Photos which do not exist have substituted by a white blank image or one more recent.

The home page and general website have been given a new look, removing the old orange background with photos from the annual. Seems more appropriate and looks better I hope.
